At Salem High School working together is second nature. Everyone is used to it and it comes naturally. Clubs include the likes of FFA, Art Club, Guitar Club, Drama Club, SADD and many more. Club members work together to make things easier and more engaging.
We work together for holidays like Halloween, where local trick or treaters line up at high school club booths to grab some candy. During school productions such as upcoming production of Seussical the Musical, art club assisted with set design. The overlap of members of clubs isn’t the reason we work together well, and it’s not the core of being a lion, though it does show our determination. The ability to connect with others who you are not distinctly required to or used to is the core of being a lion.
In my own experience, working as a member of student council and a vice president of the art club, working with clubs that you aren’t a part of or merging your worlds that you are part of can be challenging, but as we grow we can get used to it and it starts to feel like it’s the only choice. Art club and student council work very closely, and being a part of both can be a good learning experience. Working together as a school and not as singular groups is what makes being in a club fun.
Hard work is easier when you have different perspectives to rely on. For circumstances such as Seussical, the art club is taking time out of their class day to assist with set design. Carole Clodfelter, art teacher and sponsor of Art Club, took charge of the sets so that they would be cohesive and work well with the hard work of the cast members in the musical.
Dances, school programs and performances are a group effort. In student council and SADD, the group effort between clubs and students brought food to the hungry. The food drive done during the government shut down was participated in by all the clubs at the school.
The Journalism and Photography Club takes pictures of all the other clubs and they work closely with their schedules to fit the needs of each group. The pictures bring awareness to the choices we have at SHS.
Overall, at SHS the choices are vast and they are linked to each other. If a person wants to participate in a club, they will be interacting with most of the school. Working together is the foundation of our school’s ability to prosper.
